Our partners at Kauai Backcountry Adventures are the only outfitters to have access to the historic irrigation system of the former Lihue Plantation.

The history of the plantation dates back more than one hundred years and is fascinating. It all begins with Hawaii’s abundant water. Water has always been sacred to the people of Hawaii. Water is gifted by “Kane i ka wai ola” (Procreator of all living elements), and provided by Lono makua (the Rain Provider).

The sacred water made all things possible for the Lihue Plantation Company. Built in the valley of the Nawiliwili stream in 1849, it was the first sugar cane mill in Kauai. The mill rollers, iron bound granite crushers shipped over from China were powered by water and gravity. The syrup was boiled in open kettles and in 1851, a centrifugal sugar dryer was brought over from Oahu.

In 1856, the sugar industry’s first irrigation ditch, the ten mile Lihue Ditch, transported water from Kilohana Crater through the plantation. The original 3000 acre plantation expanded and grew to 20,000 acres by 1872. Six years later, they leased another 30,000 acres at Wailua.

This very same 10 mile Lihue ditch and tunnel system that once provided water to the sprawling sugar cane plantation went out of production at the turn of this century. At the beginning of 2003, Kauai Backcountry began using the routes of the system best suited for their exclusive tubing excursions. The once pioneering irrigation system, now a spectacular Kauai tubing adventure, provides flowing water through uninhabited and extraordinary parts of the Emerald island. There are spectacular views of the mountains as well as the Waialeale Crater. Mount Waialeale, dubbed one of the wettest spots in the world, provides the water that flows through the ditches and tunnels dug by men over a hundred years ago. This natural hydro power floats you and your family & friends down the flumes and through the tunnels.

The Kauai Tubing Adventure is a blast for kids over five years old and any adult who likes fun. We hope that is you!
